Louisiana’s father was shot and killed by a teenager who entered the minor daughter’s room through the upstairs window, police said

A Louisiana father is dead after a teenager who ordered him to stay away from his 14-year-old daughter allegedly slipped into his bedroom window with a ladder and shot him during a confrontation, according to local police.

The Zachary Police Department said 17-year-old Nicholas McWirter shot and killed Desmond Hamilton, 34. Authorities said the two exchanged shootings and the suspect was also wounded.

McWirter was hospitalized in critical condition and charged with second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon and possession of a stolen firearm. Booking photo was not available immediately. Police said they expected to formally arrest him after he was released from the hospital. He was not yet on the parish prison list Wednesday night.

It happened around 8 a.m. Monday on Hayfield Drive in Zachary.

“It starts at home,” Zachary Police Chief David McDavid told local media. “These young children need to learn respect, how to behave with people and learn how to deal with conflict resolution.”

After Hamilton caught the teenager in her house, the girl’s mother and grandmother took the 14-year-old girl aside to talk to her, McDavid said. When that happened, McWirter and Hamilton got into an argument.

“And then shots were fired,” McDavid said.

He described Hamilton, the victim, as a “young entrepreneur” earning a living in Zachary and surrounding communities.

Local graphic designer Carl Gipson wrote on Twitter that he was doing business with Hamilton.

“One of the clients of our design business, Desmond Hamilton, was killed on Sunday morning,” he wrote. “We designed the layout of a snowball stand and car wash he was building in Zachary.”

He said they talked often and met several times.

“At the last meeting, I just remember how excited he was when he realized that it was going to happen and that he had jumped over one of the last obstacles to do so,” he wrote. “It’s very sad. His mother had come to several of the meetings and was so happy for him.”

Hamilton had four children, according to a death notice posted on Advocate. A fifth child, Desmon Jr., died at the age of 6 in 2014.
